SLC Apologizes for Web Site Problems
February 04, 1998

The Schools and Libraries Corporation apologized Feb. 4 for problems occuring at its Web site (www.slcfund.org) when traffic is exceptionally heavy.

The SLC said when users gain access, they are often 'bumped off" or "timed out" of the site. The corporation said it has located the source of a "significant bottleneck" that is slowing down user access, and that it is working to fix the problem.

The SLC said that schools and libraries that had begun an online application could switch to mailing in a paper application, as long as they provided the Universal Service Code Number (USCN) of the application they had begun online. The SLC said that if an applicant chooses to mail in an application, the "posting date" will be the date on which the SLC's Client Service Bureau completes the inputting of the application. The clock on the 28-day posting period will not start until the full application is posted. The SLC estimated that it would take the Client Service Bureau two to three days to input an application after it receives it. However, it warned that that is a goal, not a guarantee.
