FCC Publishes Internet Access Cost Comparison

In a November 16, 2015 blog post, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) published median price data for 1GB transport and Internet access circuits on a state by state basis. With the stated intent of starting a “public dialog on the pricing data,” the Commission stated that they intend to publish a series of blogs regarding publicly available pricing data from Funding Year 2015 Form 471 applications.

Stating that “one might have expected to see greater uniformity of pricing,” the Commission notes that telecommunications carriers are required to provide services to E-rate applicants “at rates less than the amounts charged for similar services to other parties,” concluding that the “significant variability in the data on pricing warrants further analysis and discussion.”
