Applying for E-rate discounts can be an unforgiving process, with opportunities for mistakes, long hours of planning, filling out forms (and checking them a dozen times), all while straining to see through a crystal ball to know how much money your school or library will pay for services a year down the road. Recognizing that dealing with E-rate is a bit easier with a pick-me-up (and the limitations that kidneys place on coffee intake), Funds For Learning began making E-rate survival kits for our crew here during the Funding Year 2012 filing window.

It’s nice to share, so we started letting E-rate applicants join in the survival kit fun in the following filing windows. This year, we decided to send out survival kits earlier – with new rules to learn, new forms to use, new data to track and new budgetary considerations, savvy applicants will begin planning and gathering data for their applications now. Such foresight and proactivity deserves a good survival kit!

The FFL staff applied some teamwork, neatness, and design to put our best work forward in creating the E-rate Survival Kits. In the proud tradition of Henry Ford and the Venetian Arsenal, we made a smooth-flowing assembly line to put together the kits:

It was great for everyone to have a (washed) hand in the process, and contribute voluntary one-hour shifts to the project. Getting to see the kits move from stacked boxes of goodies, to piles of goodies, and then to E-rate Survival Kit bags of goodies was fun! Seeing that all boxed up and put back into piles was less fun, but we are happy to know that these kits can bring a little bit of joy (and snacks) to what can be a long and difficult E-rate process. E-rate applicants can sign up on our site here to receive a complimentary survival kit from the team here at Funds For Learning.
