How many times have we all heard…it’s in the details? With the filing window in the rearview mirror it’s time to look forward to the next hurdle in the E-rate cycle. For many that can mean responding to PIA questions, submitting FCC Form 472 (BEAR) forms, and maybe even responding to a selective review. All these things in and of themselves can create some unwanted stress in the lives of the applicant, and maybe even the consultant.

As consultants it’s our job to pay attention to the details while we help walk our clients through the E-rate maze. If we were thorough in the previous steps of the E-rate process, then we have set up the applicant for success (i.e. a positive funding commitment, BEAR reimbursements, etc.) in subsequent steps of the process. However, if at any step in the process we weren’t thorough, then the next step(s) in the E-rate process can be difficult for the applicant and possibly jeopardize their funding. The details matter!

One would think we would measure success by whether or not our client receives a positive funding commitment for their E-rate application(s). However, that’s just one of many small steps in the E-rate process. With so many details to keep track of and manage, any applicant’s application and future E-rate reimbursements can easily be derailed. It’s important that we are careful in the way we communicate with the client by asking them the right questions. It’s equally as important that we verify the accuracy of the information or documentation that we received from the client, making sure it is what we asked for and verifying that it is correct. It’s easy to fail to live up to this simple step.

Demonstrating thoroughness is one of the best ways to deliver high-quality service and to cultivate trust with others. But being thorough doesn’t always come easily. In fact, it rarely does. That’s because it requires working to the best of our ability in a comprehensive, correct and timely manner. Thoroughness is a trait that must be handled with care. It requires a deep understanding of what really matters, and then the discipline to pursue it.

We must understand the outcomes that matter and pay close attention to the details related to those outcomes -- while recognizing that there are inconsequential details that have the power to distract our time and energy away from what really counts. The details matter!
