COMMENTARY:
At work I've been parking in the same spot for a long time. However, recently I've had reason to change things up. I started noticing that the right side of my car was getting all these water spots on it. Even when I washed my car I found that the spots would show right back up the next day. After scratching my head and getting really annoyed with this pattern for a few days, I finally figured it out. The sprinkler system that is part of the landscaping out there has gotten a bit off-kilter and has been watering my car every day.

Although that's been bugging me, I can't help but admire the reliability of the whole system. Someone installed that system in the ground at one point. Maybe someone else set up the watering schedule and duration that it would run each day. And since then I'm sure they've moved on to bigger and better endeavors. Unless they notice that the grass is starting to dry up at some point, they have no reason to doubt that the system is doing its job faithfully every day.

Of course as you can see in this example, reliability is only part of what it takes to achieve the desired result. Ideally most or all of the water would land on the grass and not on the sidewalk, the parking lot or anyone's vehicle. But it's hard to argue with results: the grass out there is looking good in spite of the Oklahoma summer heat it is assaulted with every day. And so, I take this lesson away from ye old sprinkler system: figure out what works, then work out a system by which you can attain that result again and again. Now if someone could please direct me to the misbehaving sprinkler complaint department...
