How does the E-rate Community Prepare for the Future?

The E-rate Community plays a vital role in ensuring that schools and libraries across the United States have access to affordable, high-speed internet. This access is crucial for enhancing digital learning and improving customer engagement. Here are some key activities and initiatives that the E-rate Community can engage in to prepare for the future:

Advocacy Efforts: Advocacy is essential for maintaining support and funding for the E-rate program. Organizations like the American Library Association (ALA) and the Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband (SHLB) Coalition are at the forefront of these efforts. For example, library advocates recently rallied on Capitol Hill to support E-rate and the Universal Service Fund ahead of oral arguments in front of the Supreme Court. These advocacy efforts help highlight the importance of E-rate in providing high-speed internet to schools and libraries, especially in rural communities.

Insights from the SEDTA Report: The State EdTech Trends survey and report by SETDA provide valuable insights into the top edtech priorities identified by state policymakers. This report includes responses from 46 states and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and showcases the work states are leading to support cybersecurity efforts, the effective and equitable use of edtech tools, and the development of policy to guide the use of AI in K-12 classrooms. The data from this report can be used to advocate for better technology integration and funding in schools.

SHLB Coalition’s Role: The SHLB Coalition advocates for affordable, high-capacity broadband for schools, libraries, and healthcare organizations. They connect broadband leaders with policymakers to shape decisions that support these institutions. SHLB also provides expert, data-driven analysis on broadband policy and fosters collaboration among broadband leaders. Recently, SHLB celebrated a Supreme Court decision that reinforces the integrity of the E-rate program and holds providers accountable under the False Claims Act. This decision helps safeguard critical broadband funding for anchor institutions nationwide.

Support from Other Organizations: Organizations like Funds For Learning® assist in navigating the E-rate funding process and provide tools to track funding requests and commitments. They offer webinars and training sessions to help applicants maximize their funding and stay compliant with E-rate rules. Additionally, the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) administers the E-rate program and provides resources and tools for applicants to manage their funding requests.

These activities and organizations collectively contribute to the success and sustainability of the E-rate program, ensuring that schools and libraries have access to the necessary resources to provide high-speed internet and enhance digital learning.

By engaging in advocacy, leveraging insights from reports, collaborating with coalitions like SHLB, and utilizing support from organizations like Funds For Learning® and USAC, the E-rate Community can continue to make a significant impact on the digital landscape of education and library services.
