Deadline for Comments in FCC Rule-making Set

The deadline for comments in the Federal Communications Commission’s new rule-making on the E-rate program was set as April 5, 2002, following formal publication of the notice in the Federal Register on February 19.

The Commission will accept comments on or before that date. Reply comments will then be accepted on or before May 6, 2002.

The text of the rule-making can be easily accessed through the Schools and Libraries Division site at
http://www.sl.universalservice.org/whatsnew/012002.asp. Comments may be filed either online or on paper. Detailed instructions on the procedures to follow can be found at the end of the proposed rule. Filed comments can be reviewed by accessing the FCC’s Electronic Comment Filing System and searching for documents related to Proceeding Number 02-6.

The Commission is soliciting comments on particular proposals for changing the E-rate program as well as additional ideas for improving program operations, changes to ensure that funds are distributed in a fair and equitable manner and ways to improve oversight of the program to guard against waste, fraud and abuse.
