FCC Grants Virginia State Department of Education Appeal

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this week granted and remanded a Petition for Reconsideration filed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). They were initially denied in FY 2000 because the SLD determined they were requesting telecommunications services from Autotote which was not a common carrier. The FCC rules state that applicants can only receive telecommunications services from an eligible telecommunications provider.

The FCC determined that there is sufficient confusion as to whether Autotote was, in fact, a telecommunications carrier and what type of services the state was actually seeking. The SLD has 90 days to complete its review. To determine if a company is an eligible telecommunications provider visit the resources section of www.fundsforlearning.com, select SPIN Search and enter the provider’s SPIN number or name.
