Wi-Fi Hotspots Proposed for E-rate Program

On November 8, 2023, the Federal Communications Commission issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking to make off-campus Wi-Fi hotspot service eligible for E-rate program discounts. The NPRM proposes requiring schools and libraries to document “unmet need” in a similar manner as the Emergency Connectivity Fund program, and requests comments from stakeholders in the areas of product and service eligibility, funding prioritization, and cost-effectiveness.

Comments to the NRPM will be due 30 days from the publishing of the NPRM in the Federal Register, followed by an additional 30 day period for reply comments.

The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking may be viewed here.
