Every organization faces moments when direction matters most — moments when choices ripple outward, shaping culture, client trust, and long-term impact. At Funds For Learning, we’ve built a simple but powerful framework to help us navigate those moments with clarity and consistency: the FFL Compass.
The Compass is more than a form or checklist. It’s a mindset for intentional leadership — a way of slowing down just enough to think clearly before moving forward boldly. It helps us connect every initiative, large or small, to our mission of transforming student lives through connectivity.
Four Principles That Keep Us on Course
The FFL Compass works because it grounds each decision in four essentials:
- Clarity. We begin by defining the true north: what we’re solving for and why it matters.
- Alignment. Every step must connect back to our broader goals: the one-year, three-year, and ten-year vision we’re pursuing together.
- Collaboration. The Compass invites multiple perspectives, ensuring Guides across teams co-create solutions and share accountability.
- Accountability. We identify owners, set metrics, and outline the first steps, transforming good ideas into measurable progress.
From launching new E-rate Manager® services to refining internal processes, the FFL Compass gives us a common language for decision-making. It replaces guesswork with grounded confidence.

When to Use It
We use the Compass in two ways:
- The Full Compass for major initiatives: new product launches, advocacy strategies, or cross-department projects.
- The Rapid Compass for smaller, time-sensitive choices that still deserve thoughtful direction.
Regardless of scale, the process ensures we stay aligned — every action leading us closer to our mission of supporting schools and libraries.
Why It Matters
In a fast-moving environment, it’s easy to lose sight of why we started. The Compass keeps us tethered to our why. It reminds us that clarity precedes speed, and that progress means more when everyone’s rowing in the same direction.
